WorldFirst Home > Virtual Cards > Compare the best business debit cards in Australia
Business debit cards let companies manage everyday expenses directly from available funds. Have a look at this feature-rich comparison to compare fees, controls, currency support and rewards
Managing business expenses becomes more complicated as transactions span employees, suppliers, subscriptions and overseas payments. The right debit card can help keep spending tied to available funds while making it easier to track expenses and manage team purchases. This guide compares nine business debit cards in Australia across card and account fees, international transaction costs, currency support, security controls and more. It also explores the World Card, a multi-currency card by WorldFirst that supports payments in multiple international currencies.
Directly connected to your business bank account or online business account, business debit cards are a seamless way to purchase services and goods for your company’s daily operations. Compared to credit cards that allow businesses to borrow funds up to a specific limit, debit cards draw funds directly from the business’s available balance.
Debit card transaction fees are usually lower than credit card fees and there are no late payment charges to worry about. These lower costs can add up to big savings, especially for businesses with tight budgets.
Before getting a new business debit card, there are several factors that you should consider:
A card might appear at zero cost at first glance, but hidden costs can add up quickly. Always read the fine print. Pay close attention to fees for issuing new cards, international transaction fees and the monthly or annual fees associated with the business account linked to the card.
Many top business debit cards in Australia offer cashback and rewards. Look at what kind of cashback they offer and how you can make the most of it based on how your business spends money.
If you plan to give team members their own cards, choose a business debit card offering automated expense tracking and reconciliation. It saves time, improves accuracy, helps prevent fraud and gives you better control over team spending.
You should be able to set up spending limits and controls for every business card that gets issued. Spend controls allow you to prevent overspending and ensure that employees only use the company funds for approved expenses.
Look for debit cards for businesses that offer security features such as two-factor authentication and 3D Secure for online transactions. You should also be able to freeze/unfreeze cards instantly and monitor transactions in real time.
The business card should support international transactions in multiple currencies and offer competitive exchange rates.
A corporate card and a business debit card can both be used for company expenses, but they are designed for slightly different purposes:
Some corporate cards are also debit cards, meaning the distinction is not always about how the card is funded. Instead, businesses should compare the underlying account, card controls, fees, currency support and expense-management features.
| Feature | Business debit card | Corporate card |
| Funding | Draws from linked account balance | Usually linked to a business account or credit facility |
| Employee cards | May be limited | Usually designed for multiple employees |
| Spend controls | May be available | Often includes detailed limits and merchant controls |
| Expense management | Basic to moderate | Often includes receipt capture and reconciliation |
| Multi-currency support | Depends on provider | Common among specialist corporate cards |
| Best suited to | Everyday business spending | Team spending and more complex expense management |

Choosing the right business debit card in Australia depends on your company’s size, spending habits and international payment needs. If you frequently deal with overseas suppliers or clients, a multi-currency card with low or no foreign exchange fees could help reduce costs and simplify accounting.
Before making a decision, evaluate the total cost of ownership, including any account fees and weigh them against the benefits each card offers for your specific business use case.
Businesses can compare the card fee, linked account costs, international transaction charges, currency support and additional card options. It is also worth checking features such as spending controls, expense tracking, transaction alerts and digital wallet compatibility, particularly when multiple employees use company funds.
They can be, particularly for businesses that regularly pay overseas suppliers or services. Multi-currency cards may allow companies to spend directly from foreign currency balances, potentially reducing conversion costs. However, businesses should check supported currencies, foreign exchange rates and any international transaction fees.
Some business card providers allow companies to issue individual cards to employees, while others may offer only additional cardholders or some number of virtual cards. Businesses with multiple employees should check card limits, spending controls and whether each card can have separate permissions.
Some business debit cards offer cashback or other perks, but rewards vary significantly. Businesses should check eligibility requirements, spending categories, limits and promotional conditions rather than choosing a card based solely on its advertised rewards.
A business debit card generally draws money directly from an available account balance. Corporate cards can place greater emphasis on managing employee spending, with features such as individual cards, spending limits, approval workflows and expense management. Some corporate cards can also operate as debit cards.
