The complete guide to international business payments from Singapore

The visible transfer fee is only part of the cost of an international business payment. FX margins, corridor speeds and payment routes decide the rest. Here’s why.

Key takeaways

  • Every international payment from Singapore takes a route and the route decides both the cost and the settlement time
  • The transfer fee is the visible cost; FX margin and correspondent bank fees are usually larger and less obvious
  • A multi-currency account like the World Account by WorldFirst holds funds in multiple currencies and sends payments directly, avoiding the double conversions that add cost to standard cross-border transfers

The complete guide to international business payments from Singapore

Bank wires, digital payment platforms, and multi-currency accounts each move money across borders in different ways.

The right method depends on the currency, the corridor, the frequency of payment and the amount involved. Choosing between them without knowing the differences is where most cross-border payment costs come from.

This guide covers the main international payment methods available to Singapore businesses, when each one is a better fit, and what to check before sending.

How international business payments work

SWIFT: The traditional international payment network, connecting more than 11,500 banks worldwide. SWIFT doesn’t actually move the money itself; it moves the payment instructions between banks. The money is passed hand-to-hand between banks along the way. If your bank doesn’t have a direct relationship with your supplier’s bank, the payment routes through one or more correspondent banks in the middle, with each one potentially taking a fee. SWIFT payments typically settle in 3 to 5 business days.

Local payment rails: Many countries have their own domestic real-time payment systems. Singapore’s FAST and PayNow move SGD between local banks in seconds. Malaysia has DuitNow, Thailand has PromptPay, India has UPI, the UK has Faster Payments, the EU has SEPA. When a payment provider can send directly into a destination country’s local rail, the payment often settles in real time or within one business day, without the correspondent bank chain that slows SWIFT down.

Specialised payment platforms: Providers like WorldFirst layer multi-currency accounts and FX transfer services on top of local rails and SWIFT. These typically offer better exchange rates than traditional banks and faster settlement on common corridors by connecting into local rails wherever possible.

The route your payment takes is often invisible from your side. But it directly affects speed and cost, so it’s worth asking your provider which rail is used for each destination.

What international business payments actually cost

The transfer fee shown on your bank’s confirmation screen is usually the smaller part of the total cost. Four cost layers stack up on every international payment:

Transfer fee: The upfront charge for sending the payment. At traditional Singapore banks, this typically ranges from SGD 20 to SGD 40 per wire. Fintech platforms often charge lower flat fees or include transfers within account plans.

FX margin. The difference between the mid-market exchange rate (the rate you see on Google) and the rate you’re actually offered. Traditional banks typically apply a spread of 1% to 3% on top of the mid-market rate; some banks and older providers apply spreads of 4% or more on less-common currency pairs. On a SGD 100,000 supplier payment, a 3% margin is SGD 3,000 gone before any visible fee.

Correspondent bank fees. For SWIFT payments, the intermediary banks in the payment chain can each deduct a fee before passing the money on. These aren’t disclosed upfront; they show up as an unexpected shortfall on the recipient’s side.

Receiving fees. The recipient’s own bank may charge a fee to receive the incoming international payment, further reducing the amount that lands in their account.

Types of international payment providers

Singapore businesses generally have three types of provider to choose between:

Traditional banks: Most Singapore banks (DBS, OCBC, UOB and others) support outbound international transfers through SWIFT. Widely accepted and familiar, but typically the most expensive option once FX margin and correspondent fees are counted. Best for businesses with established banking relationships and infrequent international payments.

Online transfer services: Digital-first providers focused on cross-border payments. Faster settlement than SWIFT on most corridors, more transparent pricing, but coverage varies by provider. Often good for one-off transfers or specific corridors.

Multi-currency account providers: Platforms that combine account infrastructure with international payment capability. Hold balances in multiple currencies, send payments directly in the currency your recipient wants, and receive funds in local currencies without forced conversion. Best suited to businesses handling regular international payments across multiple currencies. WorldFirst is one such provider, offering the World Account with 22 currencies supported for holding and sending.

How WorldFirst supports Singapore businesses with international payments

The World Account is a multi-currency account from WorldFirst designed for Singapore businesses handling regular international payments. Rather than sending SGD through a bank wire that converts at the recipient’s end, the World Account holds balances in multiple currencies so payments can be sent directly in the currency your recipient wants.

Features for Singapore businesses include:

  • Local receiving accounts in 22 currencies, including SGD, USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, CNH, AUD, HKD, MYR and others, for collecting international income as if the account were domestic to that country.
  • Send payments in 100+ currencies to 200+ countries and regions, from a single online dashboard.
  • Forward contracts for locking in exchange rates on future payments, protecting your margins from currency swings.
  • Rate Alerts for tracking specific currency pairs and getting notified when the market hits your target rate.
  • The World Card, a Mastercard-powered business payment card supporting payments in 150+ currencies with zero FX fees in 15 supported currencies when sufficient balance is held (with cashback on eligible spending, Terms and Conditions Apply).
  • World Pay for 1688.com, the authorised international payment provider for 1688.com, for Singapore businesses paying Chinese suppliers on the wholesale platform.
  • Xero and NetSuite integrations for multi-currency reconciliation.
  • MAS-regulated under the Payment Services Act.

FAQs

1. What’s the difference between SWIFT and local payment rails?

SWIFT is the traditional international payment network that routes funds through correspondent banks between the sending and receiving banks. Local payment rails route funds directly through a destination country’s domestic payment system, avoiding correspondent banks. Local rails are typically faster and cheaper when the corridor supports them; SWIFT remains the fallback for less-connected markets.

2. Do I need a separate business account to send international payments?

Most Singapore banks require a business account for regular international payments, particularly larger amounts, and business account transactions typically get processed more smoothly by receiving banks. Multi-currency account providers like WorldFirst offer business-specific accounts with the international payment capability built in.
