How to start selling ebooks on Amazon from Africa

Everything you need to know about publishing ebooks on Amazon KDP from Africa–from setting up your account and preparing your manuscript to earning royalties and receiving payouts in foreign currencies

Key takeaways

  • Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) lets writers self-publish ebooks and paperbacks to Amazon’s global marketplace at zero upfront cost.
  • Authors earn either 35% or 70% royalty on each sale, depending on the list price and marketplace. Ebooks priced between USD 2.99 and USD 12.99 typically qualify for the 70% tier.
  • African authors can publish to Amazon KDP from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Morocco, South Africa and other markets. The core requirements are a KDP account, valid tax information and a payout method.
  • KDP pays royalties in the marketplace’s local currency (USD, GBP, EUR and others). A foreign currency receiving account makes it easier to collect these payouts without forced conversion.
  • The World Account from WorldFirst gives African authors local receiving details in 15+ currencies so KDP royalty payouts from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and European marketplaces can be received directly.

How to start selling ebooks on Amazon from Africa

For writers in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Morocco and other African markets, Amazon KDP is one of the most accessible ways to reach a global readership. There’s no printer to negotiate with, no publishing house to convince, and no upfront cost. You write the book, upload it to KDP, choose a price, and it goes live to millions of Amazon readers across the world within days.

This guide covers everything you need to start selling ebooks on Amazon from Africa: setting up your KDP account, preparing your manuscript, pricing, and how to receive royalty payouts in foreign currencies.

Step 1: Set up your KDP account

Visit kdp.amazon.com and register with your Amazon account (or create a new one). The initial signup takes a few minutes. Before your first book can go live, you’ll need to complete two additional setup steps:

Step 2: Prepare your manuscript

KDP accepts ebook manuscripts in a few formats, with EPUB being the preferred and most reliable. DOCX (Microsoft Word) also works but sometimes produces formatting inconsistencies. Focus on:

  • Clean formatting: Consistent chapter breaks, proper heading styles, no manual spacing tricks
  • Working table of contents. KDP uses your heading styles to build the navigable Kindle table of contents
  • Front and back matter: Include a title page, copyright page, optional dedication, and a “Thank you” or “About the author” section at the end
  • Metadata cleanup: Remove any tracked changes, comments or document properties before uploading

Step 3: Design your book cover

Your book cover is the single most important marketing asset for your ebook. Amazon displays covers as small thumbnails in search results, so a cover that works at thumbnail size matters more than one that looks impressive at full size.

  • Bold, readable title text: Your title should be legible when the cover is displayed at 100 pixels wide
  • High contrast: Between text and background so nothing gets lost at small sizes
  • Amazon specifications: Minimum 625 x 1,000 pixels, recommended 1,600 x 2,560 pixels, JPEG or TIFF, maximum 50MB

Step 4: Write a book description that sells

Your book description sits below the cover on your Amazon listing. Most shoppers decide whether to buy based on the cover and description alone.

KDP allows some HTML formatting in the description (bold, italics, line breaks, bullet lists). Use these to make the description scannable.

Step 5: Choose keywords and categories

KDP gives you seven keyword slots (each up to 50 characters) and up to three category selections. These determine where your book appears in Amazon search and browse categories.

Step 6: Set your price

KDP offers two royalty tiers:

  • 35% royalty on ebooks priced USD 0.99 to USD 2.98, or above USD 12.99
  • 70% royalty on ebooks priced between USD 2.99 and USD 12.99 (a small delivery fee based on file size is deducted from this tier)

Common price points and what they typically earn per US sale:

  • USD 2.99: Entry to the 70% tier. Good for shorter guides or series starters. Approximately USD 2.09 per sale.
  • USD 4.99: The most common price for non-fiction. Approximately USD 3.49 per sale.
  • USD 7.99 to USD 9.99: Premium pricing for comprehensive guides. Approximately USD 5.59 to USD 6.99 per sale.
  • USD 0.99: Used for launches or promotional pricing. Only 35% royalty, so approximately USD 0.35 per sale.

For a full royalty breakdown across marketplaces, see Amazon’s KDP royalty documentation.

Step 7: Launch and market your ebook

Amazon’s algorithm rewards early sales velocity. A concentrated burst of sales and reviews in the first 48 to 72 hours signals to Amazon that your book deserves higher search placement.

Some launch tactics that work:

  • Build a small email list before launch: Even 100 to 500 engaged subscribers can create a meaningful launch spike
  • Ask 10 to 15 readers for advance reviews: Reviews build the social proof that converts browsers into buyers
  • Set up Amazon Sponsored Products ads: These display your book in Amazon search results. Start with a USD 5 to USD 10 daily budget and automatic targeting
  • Publish consistentl: Each new book drives traffic to your entire backlist through Amazon’s recommendation engine

Receiving KDP royalty payouts in Africa

KDP pays royalties in the marketplace’s local currency: USD for Amazon.com sales, GBP for Amazon.co.uk sales, EUR for European marketplaces, and so on.

Depending on your country, KDP’s direct EFT payout option to a local bank account may or may not be available. Where it is, KDP typically converts foreign currency royalties to your local currency at their exchange rate, which usually includes a spread.

A more efficient alternative is to receive KDP payouts in the marketplace’s local currency through a foreign currency receiving account. This keeps the royalty in USD, GBP or EUR until you decide when to convert, letting you avoid losing 3% to 5% on every payout to unfavourable exchange rates.

How WorldFirst supports Amazon KDP authors in Africa

The World Account from WorldFirst is a multi-currency account that lets African authors receive KDP royalty payouts in the marketplace’s local currency, without forced conversion.

Key features for KDP authors in Africa:

  • Local receiving accounts in 15+ currencies, including USD (for Amazon.com), GBP (for Amazon.co.uk), EUR (for European marketplaces), CAD (for Amazon.ca), AUD (for Amazon.com.au) and JPY (for Amazon.co.jp). Add each currency’s receiving details to your KDP account as the payout destination for that marketplace.
  • Collect from 130+ marketplaces and payment gateways including Amazon, so all your KDP royalties settle into the same account regardless of which marketplace they come from.
  • Hold foreign currency and convert to your local currency on your own timing, at competitive rates rather than the bank’s rate on the day of payout.
  • Send payments in 100+ currencies to 200+ countries and regions, useful for paying cover designers, editors, proofreaders and ad platforms.
  • The World Card, a Mastercard-powered business payment card supporting payments in 150+ currencies with no fees when paying in any of the 15 supported currencies (with sufficient balance held in that currency). Useful for paying Amazon Ads, cover design tools and other USD-billed subscriptions from your USD royalty balance. Up to 20 cards per account at no additional cost. Cashback on eligible spending (Terms and Conditions Apply).
  • Zero fees on account opening, holding balances and receiving funds.

For African authors publishing on Amazon KDP, the World Account keeps royalty income in its original currency until conversion makes sense, protecting margins that FX spreads would otherwise take.
