Take a look at how freelancers in Africa can set up a World Account to collect their Upwork earnings in USD
Freelancers across Nigeria and Morocco earning through Upwork face a familiar problem at the end of every project: Upwork operates in USD. Local banks convert incoming foreign currency payments into local currency at the receiving bank’s exchange rate on arrival, plus receiving fees. Even when the Upwork rate looks strong, what actually lands in the freelancer’s bank account can be noticeably less.
The World Account allows freelancers in Africa to set up virtual local currency accounts and collect their earnings in multiple currencies. This guide covers why USD receiving matters for African Upwork freelancers, how to set the World Account to collect Upwork earnings.
Upwork releases earnings on a schedule tied to the contract type.
The World Account is a multi-currency account from WorldFirst, an international payments provider. The World Account holds funds across 15+ currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, CNH and others. For freelancers who occasionally work with clients paying in different currencies, or who have USD expenses to settle directly, the account handles the whole flow through one dashboard.
Apart from Upwork, you can collect payments from 130+ marketplaces and send payments in 100+ currencies.
Before starting the setup, you’ll need:
Inside the World Account dashboard, the receiving account is where Upwork will send earnings.
The details you’ll need for Upwork include the USD account number and the ACH routing number.
If Upwork requests any additional verification during setup, WorldFirst can generate an Account Verification Letter (AVL) directly from the dashboard. This can be used as a supporting bank document.
With the USD receiving account created, the next step is adding it to Upwork.
Upwork activates new withdrawal methods after three calendar days for security. Upwork may also send one or two small microdeposits to the World Account USD balance to verify ownership of the account. Microdeposits typically arrive within one to three days, at which point you confirm the amounts back inside Upwork to complete verification.
If Upwork flags the withdrawal method for a name mismatch, either add a method that matches the Upwork name exactly, or respond to Upwork’s verification email to confirm you’re an authorised user.
Once verification is complete, Upwork will deposit earnings into the World Account USD receiving account according to the withdrawal schedule set inside Upwork. Manual withdrawals can also be triggered from the Upwork earnings page at any time, subject to Upwork’s minimum withdrawal amount and any waiting periods.
Funds land in the USD balance inside the World Account, ready to hold, convert or send onward.
The World Account is available to businesses and freelancers across supported African markets. Verify eligibility and documentation requirements with WorldFirst directly before applying, since these can vary based on your country of registration and business structure.
Standard requirements include proof of business registration (or personal identification for individual freelancers), identity documents for the account holder, and any additional supporting documents requested during verification.
There are no fees on receiving funds into the World Account USD receiving account. Although, Upwork may charge a withdrawal fee at its end.
