How to collect Etsy payments with a World Account in Africa

Contents

Learn how African sellers on Etsy can receive payouts in multiple currencies with a World Account

Key takeaways

  • Etsy Payments deposits seller earnings in the currency the shop is set up in, typically USD, GBP or EUR, and the linked bank account needs to match that currency
  • African sellers sending Etsy payouts into a local bank account usually face automatic conversion into Naira, Dirham, Shilling or Cedi at the receiving bank’s rate, plus a receiving fee on top.
  • The World Account gives sellers local receiving accounts in 15+ currencies, so Etsy deposits land in the original shop currency with no fees on incoming funds
  • Setup is compact: open a World Account, create a receiving account in the matching currency, and add those details to the Etsy Payments dashboard
  • Collected funds can be held, converted between currencies at competitive rates, used to cover Etsy fees and ad spend through the World Card, or withdrawn to a local bank account

Etsy sellers across Africa serve a global buyer base, with customers paying in dollars, pounds and euros depending on the shop’s setup. Etsy handles the buyer transaction through Etsy Payments, collects the funds, and forwards them to the seller’s linked bank account on a chosen deposit schedule.

If the linked bank account is a local African account, the payout currency gets converted into the local currency on arrival. The seller doesn’t control the timing or the rate, and conversion fees reduce what actually lands.

This guide covers how African Etsy sellers can receive payouts through a World Account, keeping earnings in the original currency until the seller decides what to do with them.

What you need before getting started on Etsy Payments

Etsy uses Etsy Payments to process all buyer transactions on the platform. When a customer places an order, the funds sit inside the seller’s Etsy Payments account and are then forwarded to the seller’s linked bank account based on the deposit schedule selected (daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly).

Before Etsy Payments can be activated, sellers go through identity and business verification. Sellers may be asked to provide information such as:

  • The entity name as it appears on the government-issued business document
  • A legal business address
  • A business identification number
  • Details of any ultimate beneficial owners holding at least 25% of the business

Etsy may request additional documentation during this process. Once verified, the seller can configure their deposit schedule and add their receiving account details.

Any time the bank account details are updated or changed, Etsy applies a five-day holding period before deposits resume.

How to receive Etsy payouts with a World Account in Africa

Etsy pays out in the currency the shop operates in. If the linked bank account doesn’t hold that currency, the payout gets converted at the receiving bank’s own rate.

The World Account is a multi-currency account from WorldFirst, an international payments provider. It allows African sellers to set up local receiving accounts in 15+ currencies including USD, GBP or EUR.

The World Card, a Mastercard-powered virtual business payment card linked to the World Account. Collected funds available in your World Account can be spent using the World Card. No fees apply when paying in any of the 15 supported currencies (with sufficient balance held in that currency). Businesses can issue up to 20 cards at no additional cost. Cashback is available on eligible spending (Terms and Conditions Apply).

Here are the steps to receive Etsy payouts using a World Account

Step 1: Create a receiving account in the matching currency

The receiving account inside the World Account is where Etsy will send the payout. It needs to match the shop’s deposit currency.

  1. Log in to the World Account dashboard and go to the Collection tab
  2. Click Manage Accounts, then Add a New Receiving Account
  3. Select the currency that matches the Etsy shop (USD for a US shop, GBP for a UK shop, EUR for a European shop)
  4. Complete the fields as prompted and confirm
  5. Once the account is live, click Details to pull up the account number, routing number, sort code, IBAN or BIC, depending on the currency

Keep these details ready for the next step.

Step 2: Add the receiving account to Etsy

With the receiving account created, the next step is adding it to Etsy as the deposit destination.

  1. On Etsy.com, go to Shop Manager, then Finance
  2. Select Payment Settings
  3. Choose a deposit schedule: daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly
  4. Under the bank account section, enter the World Account receiving details from Step 1

If the receiving account is US-based (USD), Etsy usually verifies it straight away. For accounts outside the US (GBP, EUR and others), Etsy may require additional verification steps. Etsy’s own help centre covers what’s needed for non-US account verification.

Once the account is verified, Etsy deposits start flowing into the World Account on the chosen schedule, provided the balance meets Etsy’s minimum deposit threshold.

Collecting payouts from more international marketplaces

The World Account is not tied to a single marketplace. It works with 130+ global marketplaces and payment gateways, so African sellers active on Amazon, Shopify, Stripe and other platforms can bring all their payouts into one account. Each marketplace pays into the matching currency receiving account, and the seller sees all balances from a single dashboard.

For a seller whose business started on Etsy and is now expanding into other channels, the same World Account picks up each new revenue stream without needing a separate setup.
