How to get paid on Upwork with a World Account in Africa [2026]

Contents

Take a look at how freelancers in Africa can set up a World Account to collect their Upwork earnings in USD

Key takeaways

  • Upwork pays all freelancers in USD, so African freelancers withdrawing to a local bank account often lose value on forced conversion into Naira, Cedi, Shilling or Dirham on arrival
  • The World Account gives freelancers access to a USD receiving account with local US bank details which they can use to collect their Upwork earnings
  • Once linked and verified, Upwork earnings settle into the World Account in USD and stay there until you decide to convert, spend or withdraw
  • The same World Account can also hold funds across 15+ currencies, send payments in 100+ currencies across 200+ countries and regions, and connect with 130+ marketplaces and payment gateways.

Freelancers across Nigeria and Morocco earning through Upwork face a familiar problem at the end of every project: Upwork operates in USD. Local banks convert incoming foreign currency payments into local currency at the receiving bank’s exchange rate on arrival, plus receiving fees. Even when the Upwork rate looks strong, what actually lands in the freelancer’s bank account can be noticeably less.

The World Account allows freelancers in Africa to set up virtual local currency accounts and collect their earnings in multiple currencies. This guide covers why USD receiving matters for African Upwork freelancers, how to set the World Account to collect Upwork earnings.

When do Upwork earnings become available?

Upwork releases earnings on a schedule tied to the contract type.

  • Hourly contracts: Hours are billed weekly (Monday to Sunday), with earnings becoming available for withdrawal ten days later, on the following Wednesday. Some contracts may qualify for faster payment options.
  • Fixed-price contracts: Funds are released five days after the client approves a milestone, following Upwork’s standard security period.
  • Project Catalog: Same schedule as fixed-price contracts, with funds cleared five days after client approval.
  • Bonuses: Available five days after the client’s payment is processed.

Why use a World Account for Upwork earnings

The World Account is a multi-currency account from WorldFirst, an international payments provider. The World Account holds funds across 15+ currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, CNH and others. For freelancers who occasionally work with clients paying in different currencies, or who have USD expenses to settle directly, the account handles the whole flow through one dashboard.

Apart from Upwork, you can collect payments from 130+ marketplaces and send payments in 100+ currencies.

Steps to get paid on Upwork with a World Account

Before starting the setup, you’ll need:

  • An active World Account. Registration is completed online through the WorldFirst website. Business or personal details, identity documents and any business registration documents are submitted at this stage. Verification typically takes a few business days.
  • A verified Upwork freelancer account. Your tax information needs to be entered on Upwork first, since Upwork requires this before any withdrawal method can be added.
  • Your Upwork verified name. The name on the World Account receiving account must match the verified name on your Upwork profile. Upwork flags mismatches, and even small differences can hold up withdrawals.

Step 1: Set up a USD receiving account in your World Account

Inside the World Account dashboard, the receiving account is where Upwork will send earnings.

  1. Log in to the World Account dashboard
  2. Go to the Collection tab, then click Manage Accounts
  3. Click Add a New Receiving Account
  4. Select USD as the currency
  5. Fill in the required details, including account usage and marketplace platform
  6. Confirm to create the account
  7. Once the account is active, click Details to view the account information

The details you’ll need for Upwork include the USD account number and the ACH routing number.

If Upwork requests any additional verification during setup, WorldFirst can generate an Account Verification Letter (AVL) directly from the dashboard. This can be used as a supporting bank document.

Step 2: Add the World Account as a withdrawal method on Upwork

With the USD receiving account created, the next step is adding it to Upwork.

  1. Sign in to Upwork and go to Settings
  2. Select Withdrawals (or Get Paid on mobile)
  3. Click Add a method
  4. Select Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) and click Set up
  5. Choose a withdrawal schedule (manual or automatic on a set cycle), then click Next
  6. Enter the receiving account details from Step 1. Two fields matter most:
    • Routing Number: use the ACH routing number from the World Account
    • Account Number: use the USD account number from the World Account
  7. Confirm the details and save.

Upwork activates new withdrawal methods after three calendar days for security. Upwork may also send one or two small microdeposits to the World Account USD balance to verify ownership of the account. Microdeposits typically arrive within one to three days, at which point you confirm the amounts back inside Upwork to complete verification.

If Upwork flags the withdrawal method for a name mismatch, either add a method that matches the Upwork name exactly, or respond to Upwork’s verification email to confirm you’re an authorised user.

Step 3: Start receiving Upwork payouts

Once verification is complete, Upwork will deposit earnings into the World Account USD receiving account according to the withdrawal schedule set inside Upwork. Manual withdrawals can also be triggered from the Upwork earnings page at any time, subject to Upwork’s minimum withdrawal amount and any waiting periods.

Funds land in the USD balance inside the World Account, ready to hold, convert or send onward.
