From Beijing’s temple fairs to Guangzhou’s flower fairs, there all sorts of ways to celebrate Chinese New Year – and the vibe is so friendly!
National Pyrotechnic Festival, Tultepec, Mexico – Feb 1-12 (TBC)
What’s not to like about fire and fireworks? This event is all in honour of the patron saint of fireworks – who knew there was such as thing?
Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney, Australia – March 5
There are several events like this, but this is one of the very biggest. And there’s so much going on, from an enormous harbour party to drag races on Bondi Beach and the Mardi Gras Film Festival, then a huge parade to round it all off.

Boi Bumba is a real Brazilian folk theatrical tradition. Local music, drinks and tastes await you!
Festival of San Fermin, Pamplona, Spain – July 6-14
You’ll have heard of the running of the bulls, but there’s much more to the Festival of San Fermin than that. There are parties, fireworks and processions galore!
Calgary Stampede, Calgary, Canada – July 8-17
Cowboy hat at the ready! Join the stampede and be part of the 100,000 or more that head to the Calgary Stampede daily. Rodeo and concerts await, and make sure you try a scorpion pizza.
Burning Man, Nevada, USA – August 28 – Sep 5
What starts as bare terrain ‘becomes’ a city built by revellers! It’s an awesome festival of art, parades and music. Everyone that goes is involved in building it – making Burning Man what it is.
Diwali, India – October 9-16
The festival of lights is India’s biggest festival. The atmosphere is wonderful, candlelight provides real warmth – in every sense – and the fireworks and firecrackers add drama.
Loi Krathong, Bangkok, Thailand – November 15
Simply enchanting. Gather at the water – whether rivers, lakes and canals – and give thanks to the goddess of water. Decorate lotus shaped rafts with candles, flowers and incense, then release into the water.
