The rates on the converter are the "interbank" rates. These are the true market rates - the rates at which banks deal with each other in amounts over £5million. Transactions under that amount will receive slightly lower rates.
Purchases of cash bank notes and travellers cheques will usually receive rates 2-4% under interbank rates because of the increased processing costs of cash handling and postage.
